A Story about Baking and Relationships
Waitress,
the Broadway musical, is inspired by a film with the same name written
by Adrienne Shelly. Tony Award winner Jessie Mueller stars in the role
of Jenna, a waitress and talented pie maker who works at a diner and
feels trapped in a small Southern town and a loveless marriage. She
unexpectedly becomes pregnant and fears that she will be forced to give
up her dream of opening her own pie shop. Jenna decides to enter a pie
baking contest hoping to win a substantial prize. She also begins an
affair with a local doctor in the hopes of making a fresh start.
Previous Production of Waitress
The
original stage production of Waitress made its debut in August 2015 at
the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The musical
was directed by Tony Award winner Diane Paulus and choreographed by
Chase Brock. It featured original music and lyrics written by Sara
Bareilles, a singer, songwriter, and five-time Grammy Award nominee.
Jessie Mueller played the lead role of Jenna. Waitress was nominated for
2015 Outer Critics Circle and Drama League Awards for Best Musical.
Broadway Performances
Waitress
transferred to the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on Broadway in early 2016,
with previews beginning in March and an official opening in April. Parts
of the book were changed, new choreography was developed, and Bareilles
wrote a new song for the Broadway production.
Historic All-Female Creative Team
The
Broadway production of Waitress is the work of an all-female creative
team. The book was written by screenwriter Jessie Nelson, and the play
is choreographed by Lorin Latarro and directed by Diane Paulus. The
music and lyrics were written by Bareilles. Waitress made Broadway
history as the first play with the top four creative posts all filled by
women. Other prominent positions in the Broadway production are also
held by women.
